Signing Up/Signing In
Sign out of password-protected Web sites before creating the first MSN
Explorer account. If you are signed in to a password-protected
Web site in Internet Explorer when you create the first user in MSN
Explorer, the password information will be moved to the new MSN Explorer
account along with your other Internet Explorer cookie information.
Therefore, we recommend that you sign out of any password-protected Web
sites in Internet Explorer before creating your first MSN Explorer user
account.
When signing in using a Kids Passport,
I am told that I need a parent's permission to continue. After going
through the consent process, what do I do next?
Once you have completed the consent
process, you can sign in to MSN Explorer. Close the Kids Passport consent
window and sign in again to MSN with the Kids Passport.
My child wishes to visit a Web site
that he or she does not have permission to visit. What do I do? When your child has a Kids Passport and
visits a Web site that he or she does not have permission to visit, a Help
window will appear that contains instructions that you can follow to
provide him or her with access to the site. Note that you will need to
sign in with your own account to follow these instructions.
I have a Kids Passport that ends in "@passport.com."
Can I use this to sign in to MSN Explorer?
No, MSN Explorer doesn't support passport.com accounts. To get a Kids Passport that ends in
@msn.com, you must create a new
account. Sign out of MSN Explorer and click Add New User.
FAQs/General Help
I already have a MSN Internet Access
Account. Will anything change if I install MSN Explorer? Yes. There
are two major differences between MSN Explorer and the MSN Internet Access
software you’re using now:MSN
Explorer uses a new e-mail program. This program is based on MSN
Hotmail, a Web-based e-mail service. When you upgrade to MSN
Explorer, your e-mail Inbox will be converted automatically from POP3 e-mail to
Web-based e-mail. All of your new e-mail will
come to you in MSN Explorer.
Important details about your e-mail and newsgroups are:
You will not lose any e-mail.
Your e-mail address will not change.
You will receive all your new e-mail in MSN Explorer instead of Outlook
Express.
Your old e-mail will remain in Outlook Express, and you will be able to
see it there.
Your address book will be copied to MSN Explorer. It will also remain in
Outlook Express.
You can access your newsgroups through Outlook Express.
You can access your e-mail from a computer connected to the Internet
anywhere in the world.
You cannot switch your e-mail account back to your previous program by uninstalling MSN Explorer and reinstalling a prior version of MSN Internet
Access.
Click here to learn how to set
up Outlook Express to access
your new e-mail account.
Web based e-mail does not require Outlook Express, so some e-mail
features have changed. For example, your address book is now web-based so
you can access information on your contacts from any computer.
MSN Explorer has a new look and feel! MSN Explorer looks
quite different from Internet Explorer, and it has greater
capabilities. Many of the buttons and
controls have been moved or changed.
MSN Explorer has also replaced Internet Explorer with a new Web
browser. When you sign in to MSN, you can still use Internet Explorer to surf the Web, but the MSN Explorer window will always open first.
Information for Users with Disabilities
I am a person with disabilities and I was wondering: is MSN Explorer accessible?
Yes.
MSN Explorer has many accessibility features. You can read about
them
in detail in the Help for MSN Explorer. To get to Help, press F1
and then select Making MSN Explorer
Accessible.
I use
JAWS 3.7 and several punctuation characters are spoken before I
hear any combo box values.
MSN Explorer includes a settings file for JAWS 3.7 that resolves
this issue. To add this file
to your JAWS installation, you will need to:
- Launch Windows Explorer.
- Find your MSN Explorer folder. (typically c:\program files\MSN\MSNCoreFiles)
Note: this folder is a hidden, system folder. To see this
folder in Windows Explorer, select "show all files" on the View tab of
the Folder Options properties sheet.
- Select the msnmetal.jcf file, then press CTRL + C to copy the file.
- Find the folder to where
Jaws is installed, (typically c:\jawsxx, where xx is the version number of JAWS)
- Open the \settings\enu
folder, then press CTRL + V to paste msnmetal.jcf into this
folder.
I use
a screen reader. How do I step through sign-up for MSN Explorer?
Because of new web technologies used in the design of MSN
Explorer sign-up, different screen readers are giving different user
experiences. If you need assistance when signing up to use MSN
Explorer or when adding a new user, press the F1 key to open the help
pane, then select "Using assistive technology to sign up".
For the best experience using MSN Explorer with an assistive device, you
should use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, and your assistive
device software should be current:
Window-Eyes: version 4.0 or later
ZoomText: version 7.06 or later
JAWS for Windows: version 3.7 or later
I'm using JAWS for Windows or Window-Eyes, and I cannot find the
location to enter the text of an e-mail message. Also, certain menus
such as Favorites or Online Buddies are not read by my screen reader. To work around this problem, close your screen
reader and restart it. E-mail and menu items should be accessible
after restarting.
I'm using JAWS for Windows, and when I press Enter on the Back button
to go back to the previous page in signup, the Continue button is
activated. This can occur when using JAWS for Windows
in Virtual PC mode. To work around this issue, use ALT+B
to navigate to a previous page when signing up.
I'm using Jaws for Windows or Window-Eyes to sign up to use
MSN Explorer, and I am not presented with a list of e-mail
addresses to use. This issue can occur when using JAWS
for Windows in Virtual PC mode, or Window-Eyes in MSAA mode.
To get the list of suggested e-mail addresses, Turn Virtual PC
mode or MSAA mode off, then turn it back on again.
How do I use the music player on the MSN Music Web site with a
keyboard? You can use the following keyboard shortcuts to
control the MSN Music player:
CTRL+P play/pause
CTRL+S stop
CTRL+F skip forward to the next song
F10 volume up
F9 volume down
F8 mute
I use the captioning feature in Windows Media™ Player (WMP) and it
doesn’t seem to work in MSN Explorer’s embedded WMP.
MSN Explorer does not support captioning in its embedded
Windows Media Player (WMP) because it was not possible to
provide a consistent, reliable service across all versions of WMP6 and
WMP7. When the WMP Now Playing option is set to On,
and you play media content with captioning, captioning will not appear in
the MSN Explorer embedded WMP. A future release of MSN Explorer will
resolve this issue for WMP6 and WMP7 users.
Some Web
pages I go to in MSN Explorer are accessible and others are
not.
MSN
Explorer opens the doors of the Internet for users with
disabilities. To some extent MSN Explorer lets
you control and override certain aspects of Web pages that would
otherwise be inaccessible.
MSN recommends that Web page content authors modify their
existing pages to comply with the World Wide Web Consortium
(W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) guidelines for Web
Content (WC) at http://www.w3.org/WAI/.
MSN is presently engaged in converting Web pages to comply with
the WAI-WC guidelines. If a change would negatively affect
users without disabilities, MSN will design an accessible Web page with
the same content.
